Beppu, we hardly knew ye

.
First: yahoo! Fast internet in the inn's lobby.

Then, more substantially... after an exciting afternoon of train rides (of which roughly 1/5 of the time seemed to involve tunnels), including one change that allowed us five minutes to leave one train and find the next, we have arrived in Beppu. Sad to say, nothing thus far (except the bay/ocean and mountains) looks familiar to Mother.

At any rate, we are settled in. Cousin Tsurue and Aunt Fuchan have been advised of our presence. :) We are excited to see them. We hope Uncle Hiko will be able to come too. It's Wednesday here tomorrow so they'll have to take off work... but we hope a visit from abroad merits it. :D

That's it for the moment. Short and sweet. Just like Mother.

****
Our day: Waiting for trains...
Relaxing in trains...
Going through tunnels.Horsing around.

Checking out our Sonic slippers... aptly described by Troy as "snazzy."

Glimpsing the ocean. (So this is what sea level looks like.)
Taking a last view to the west, just before reaching Beppu.
And eventually reaching our destination of choice: East Gate for Seaside.
Of which pictures shall be posted ... tomorrow. :)

Why so many tunnels? Underwater? Under mountains? Under cities?

Don't forget to visit the site of my birth! I'm sure that it will be especially noteworthy.

Tunnels mostly due to mountains, but then one due to an under-the-sea stretch before reaching Kyushu. Will definitely ask to see your place of birth, and will take photos of whatever is there now, if it's not the original structure. We can hope!

I heard that it is a parking lot or some such thing.
